Once upon a time, I worked part time in a local hardware store.
Checkout registers used a DOS-based form the clerk filled out.
One day a customer made a purchase and paid with a check. The clerk
indavertently typed the check's account number into the "amount
tendered" field, The program dutifully subtracted the amount of the
purchase, and came up with something like $40,000. due in change.
Without missing a beat, the cashier started counting out twenty dollar
bills to the customer. I was watching her. The manager was watching
her. We were both wondering when she was going to come to her senses.
When the last twenty had been counted she turned to the managaer and
said: " I need more twenties."
